Poor Man’s Garlic Bread

As I made one of our favorite in-a-pinch side dishes the other day, I thought “surely I can’t be the only one that does this.” So I asked my husband if I should post about it. He said sure, but he also said that he thought everyone does this.

I couldn’t wait to post and find out! Do you make Poor Man’s Garlic Bread?

If you don’t, you might be wondering what it is. It’s quite simple really – hot dog or hamburger buns toasted in the oven with some butter and garlic powder, salt and Italian seasoning sprinkled on top.

I frequently find packages of either kind of buns (both white and whole wheat) marked down on manager’s special to 50¢ or less. When I see those, I snag a few and throw them in my freezer for just this reason. So cheap and so easy. Unless I’m making real garlic bread, our kids prefer this option to frozen loaves of garlic bread. I’m not going to complain!

I can’t wait to hear if you’ve ever made this too!

we do this all the time! It is a great use for leftover buns>

  2. I don’t do this often enough! I sprinkle some parmesan cheese on as well (I always keep grated parmesan in the freezer!).

  3. Lisa says:

I just started doing this and the kids love it! Got the idea from a friend of mine. We were having spaghetti with them for dinner and they served hamburger bun garlic toast with it. :)

  4. Jenni says:

I do it and sprinkle a little cheese on as well! It’s my favorite garlic bread!

  5. Dawn says:

My mom did this all the time growing up and I do it sometimes. I did this other day with Grands Biscuits.

  6. Becky says:

Oh yes! I make these all the time! With just my husband and I, I try to get creative with the ways we use extra bread…garlic bread, french toast, mini pizzas, cheesy bread, etc, but. The garlic bread is by far my favorite!

  7. LVan says:

I didn’t realize this wasn’t “real” garlic bread. We do this all the time. The only time we buy the huge loaf of garlic bread from the store is for a big get-together. Around the house, every day, we just use what we have – buns, bread, whatever!

  8. Christy says:

We do this all the time with leftover buns, or I will use the buns to make homemade croutons.

  9. Creative triplet mom says:

I have never done this but wanted to say thank you. I am going to try it since I always have hot dog rolls left over. Thank you for sharing this. I think my kids will love it.

  10. Yes, we love to do that, too! Great post! =)

  11. Mrs. Chili says:

I do this all the time. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s yummy; what else do we need?

  12. Starla says:

Yes, I use leftover buns to make garlic bread. I also use leftover sandwich bread to make garlic toast in the oven. It is also pretty tasty.

  13. This is a good idea. Plus, sometimes you don’t want to defrost or prepare a whole loaf. An individual bun is just right!

  14. All the time! I had some leftover kaiser rolls from the 4th and made bread pudding with those. Chocolate chip bread pudding, oh it was divine! Another use for that leftover bread.

  15. stephanie says:

We do this all the time – especially with leftover hamburger & hot dog buns. Yum!

  16. Christi says:

I LOVE making Garlic Bread like this! There is just something about the taste of these buns that is so different than a French Loaf when making Garlic Bread!

  17. Syndy says:

I make this all the time. I even posted it on my recipe blog a couple of years ago and called it Poor Man’s Garlic Bread! Crazy! My family prefers it to regular garlic bread.

  18. Sheila says:

I do this. It’s also a way of using buns that have begun to get just a little stale.

  19. carol says:

Change it up a bit…butter the buns and sprinkle with a nice thick layer of cinnamon and sugar before baking. Breakfast treats, made fast, cheap and easy!

  20. Erin says:

Never thought to use hot dog buns, but we don’t really care for them, other than with hot dogs once in a while. I try to limit the number of hot dog buns on hand lest I be tempted to have hot dogs more than a couple times a year! I do use leftover Italian bread or baguettes, though.

  21. Sandy says:

Buns make the best garlic bread! I do mine just like you, but add a sprinkle of Parmesan. Yum!

  22. Marianne G says:

Of course we do this…we also have used them to make cinnamon toast. I’ve used hamburger buns inside-out to make grilled cheese on also. I could go on and on, there’s always a way to use buns, they work for french toast also. Ok, I’ll stop now…

  23. cindy says:

thank you for this post. I have never heard of this before! sounds great!

  24. jan says:

thank you! Have never done this and usually use day-old rack Italian bread that I collect for the freezer. Buns or sub rolls are easier to find.

  25. Kate says:

growing up we used to do it all the time. We loved how crunchy the edges got!

  26. Theresa says:

I have done this with regular bread, but I NEVER would have thought to do it with hotdog or hamburger buns. DUH! I will remember this one! Not everything that is ‘common’ to some is common to others so I am glad you blogged about it! :o )

  27. Sounds like a good idea…we haven’t done this. :)

  28. Buns really do make great bread for this sort of thing; home made garlic bread is healthier and tastier than store bought in my opinion!

  29. Stephanie Edwards says:

I have done this MANY times. But I also have used old buns for bread crumbs. Toast them then process them in a food processor. You will need to freeze or refirgerate or they mold.

  30. Rhonda says:

I’ve done this for many years, works great with lots of meals!

  31. Shelli says:

When I was little, we took white bread, dotted it 5 times with butter (four corners, and middle), sprinkled it with Garlic salt, and put it under the broiler for a few minutes. The 5 dots were accidental–mom only had stick butter the first time she did it, which of course is too hard to spread on soft white bread. But it worked because the areas around the dots got toasted. =)

I love all kinds of garlic bread now-really, we take it very seriously around here–but every once in a while I get a craving for that kind.

  32. Shonda says:

I do this all the time – with whatever bread is available! Usually, I’ve stashed leftover packages in the freezer for this specific reason – I mix butter w/ minced garlic and some Italian seasonings – the kids think it is gourmet!! Although, I have never thought to add cheese until reading these comments!

  33. Julie says:

My dad used to make it this way….I always loved it!

  34. Tessa says:

I have done this for years, but I use basil instead of the Italian seasoning and add shredded parmesan along with lots of garlic powder…very yummy!

  35. Thank for nice recipe for breakfast it is very simple to make but tasty, I spread black peeper and some cheese and sandwich spread after bake it taste is not bad.

  36. Lori A. says:

    I do this, too. :)

  37. Elizabeth Gregory says:

I’m so glad to find out that I’m not the only one who does this! My husband and son prefer their hot dogs and hamburgers sans bun, so there’s always extras for me to turn into garlic bread. :)
